Mumbles celebrate claiming the Three South West title |
Having sealed their title
triumph with a 27-0 away win over Ystalyfera on May 8th, the team
carried off the SWALEC Division 3 South West title topping the table at 94 points.
The weeks leading up to
the final game have been challenging for the team knowing that they had to win five
of their remaining games with bonus points to boot league favourites, Trebanos,
off the top spot.
Their remaining games were
against some of the best teams in the league but Mumbles succeeded to reach the
points needed for promotion; the first in almost five seasons.
Team captain, Paul
Gooding, said: “I am so proud of everyone involved in this season’s success.
We’re like a family and even have three brothers playing for us, one of which
was Andrew Littlehales, who led the team to victory as captain tonight as I’m
injured. We set a challenge to ourselves at the beginning of the season and
didn’t think that we’d actually get the results we needed to take Trebanos off
the top. It’s been a challenging season but the hard work has really paid off.
We’re looking forward to what Division 2 will bring us next season.”
Coach, Simon Evans, said:
“The journey to promotion started around three seasons ago and I have been so
impressed with every player’s determination and dedication to get to Division
2. The senior team’s commitment has also transpired down to our junior and
youth sides as they too have had a successful season. This promotion will
really give our younger players something to aspire to which is important to us
as we want our youth side to stay with the club as they become seniors.”
