Treorchy claim Worthington Mid District Cup

Treorchy defied all the odds and thoroughly deserved to defeat the favourites Bargoed and gain the Worthington Mid District Cup in a rousing game played at Sardis Road, Pontypridd.

Bargoed’s season was probably their best-ever, but they had gained no trophy and this looked to be their night.

But, The Zebras had other ideas and clever planning plus some clinical finishing deservedly took them to victory and their magnificent defence meant that Bargoed never came close to scoring a try.

Five penalty goals by fly half Josh Prosser was all that Bargoed had to offer and though they led at 9-8 and 15-13, there was no doubting it was to be Treorchy’s night.

The Treorchy fly half Celyn Ashton had a mixed night of good goals kicked but others missed, including a close-range conversion, and he was also yellow-carded.

It was scrum half Lloyd Williams who proved a deadly attacker, scoring one and playing a large part in another try.

Premiership No 8 Craig Everett was brought into the Treorchy lineup and declared player of the match, but Williams and the lively wing Peter Hutchings were close contenders.

Ashton and Prosser traded penalties before centre Trystan Lazarus ran in for a superb score only for Prosser to kick goals two and three.

Then a Williams break almost gained a try but quick ball was spun for wing Andrew Mallin to score, yet Prosser put Bargoed back in front with goals four and five before and after the interval.

Ashton returned from the sin-bin to place a penalty and restore a Treorchy lead they were now never to lose.

Williams went away for a clever blind-side try that Ashton converted and the latter placed his third penalty before Hutchings tore in for a fourth and fully deserved Treorchy try

The Mid District Cup  was presented to captain Jamie Summers by Mr. Martin Anderson, Regional Director of Molson Coors.
