Duo seal second division and final berth

MIKE Shepherd and Glenn Trigg have sealed the Tredegar & Rhymney Cock of the North second division title, booking a grand final place in the process.

The duo’s opponents in the showpiece event will be decided this weekend when the last regular season fixtures in division one are played.

Current leaders John Davies and Leon Hillman face nearest rivals Mark Davies and Gwyn Board knowing a draw is good enough to clinch the first division crown.

Their two-point lead at the top means their fate is firmly in their hands and if they do get the result they want it will be just reward for an almost flawless winter league season.

Shephard and Trigg were also in control of their own destiny going into their final game against Andrew Evans and Jeremy Davies.

And although second-placed Nick Watkins and Alan Borja won, Shephard and Trigg held their nerve to clinch first place on 26 points, one ahead of the runners-up.

David Dennehy and Will Price ended their campaign in third on 22 points despite losing to Nick Dufty and Nathan Goggin, who finished seventh out of the 16 pairs.

Andrew Thomas and Alan Jones were level with Evans and Davies on 19 points in the final standings after beating bottom-of-the-table Marc and Craig Watkins, who couldn’t improve on their mediocre tally of just three points.

Two pairs have booked their places in the semi-finals of the Winter League at Monmouth with two quarter-finals still to be played.

Micky Pryce and Brad Hudson booked their berth in the last four by overcoming Joe Griffiths and Sam Meredith while John Head and Josh Davies saw off Steve Roach and Richard Meredith.

Head and Davies await the winner of the Jack Spary and Nigel Morris versus Paul and Gary Jones. Pryce and Hudson take on either Gareth Walters and Paul Trueman or Richard Price and Victor Fisk.

In the Winter League at Wernddu, Stewart Wenham took the honours in the latest round of competition with a score of 39 points. He won on countback from Carl Withers with Stephen Shaw third on 38.
