Amateur trio handed Wales Open chance

THREE of the best amateur golfers in Wales will get the chance to mix it with the professionals at the ISPS Handa Wales Open at Celtic Manor.

Rhys Pugh, Jason Shufflebotham and Rhys Enoch, all on golf scholarships in the US and have been named in the Great Britain and Ireland squad to take on the continent of Europe in the St Andrews Trophy, will get the opportunity to match their skills against some of the top professionals in the European game from May 31-June 3.

Three places in the European Tour event are offered to the Golf Union of Wales for the nation's top amateurs to gain experience that will help their future professional careers.

“This is a great opportunity for three of the best up and coming golfers in Wales,” said Golf Union of Wales Performance Director Ben Waterhouse.

“We would like to thank Celtic Manor and the European Tour for granting the wildcards to our players and what a fantastic opportunity it will be for them.

“As the three players selected at GB and I level this season they were the obvious trio to get this chance, now it is a question of them making the most of the chance, learning as much as they can from the players and the situations around them.”
