Simpson shows his mettle to land last ditch drop goal

Ebbw Vale had to rely on a last minute drop goal from stand-in fly half Charlie Simpson to maintain their 100% record in the Championship, as they battled to a 12-9 win over Cardiff Met in a bruising encounter at Cyncoed.
The Steelmen took an early lead through outside half Dan Haymond with a penalty, but Mark Cooke replied with two of his own to give the students a narrow 6-3 lead at the break.
Cooke was once again on target after the interval to extend the hosts' lead and with Haymond off with an injured hamstring, the signs were ominous for the Steelmen. However, this Ebbw Vale team refuse to lose at the moment and hit back with two Adam Jones penalties, as the Students' discipline began to wane under intense pressure. With only moments remaining, Ebbw Vale had possession and drove deeper and deeper into opposition territory, as Simpson stepped back into the pocket and struck a drop gaol through the uprights.
Bargoed are the new leaders of the division by a single point after they claimed their seventh straight win dispatching a poor Blackwood side 31-12.
The Blues were comfortably the better side running in four tries through Lewis Protheroe, James Pizey, Gareth Davies and were also awarded a penalty try. Josh Prosser fired home a penalty and the extras to all four touchdowns.
Meanwhile, third placed Newbridge continued their impressive form with a 33-20 win at Bridgend Athletic.
The visitors ran in five tries in all with a superb individual try from half way by Tom Edwards, while Bevan Howells, Geraint Edmunds and Trevor James also crossed as well as notching up a penalty try. Neil Burnett added four of the five conversions.
After the much publicised upheaval and stress at Pontypool over the summer, they finally recorded their first win of the season with a 33-23 home win over Whitland.
Pooler outscored their rivals four tries to three with outside half Clayton Gullis running proceedings, bagging a try and adding a conversion and three penalties, while Steffan Morgan, David Sandals and Chris Macey also crossed the whitewash as the Gwent side moved off the bottom of the division.
In the closest contest of the day, Tata Steel narrowly saw off Llanharan 27-24 at the Dairyfield.
The Saints picked up a deserved win, controlling much of the possession and territory with tries from Gareth Beer, wing Gareth John and back row Rob Hill, while full back Gareth Walters notched up 12 points with the boot.
The Dairymen didn’t leave the day empty handed, however, claiming two bonus points as they ran in four tries through Sion Summers, Ross Pritchard, Ryan Evans and a penalty try for a deliberate knock on.
Beddau put visiting Bonymaen to the sword with a 31-3 one-sided show at Mount Pleasant Park
The Green and Golds took a while to establish themselves in proceedings but once they got going, there was no way back for the visitors with the hosts claiming five tries in total, winger Chris Roberts stealing the show with a double.
Finally, Narberth convincingly beat Glamorgan Wanderers 25-10, with Wayne Williams touching down twice for the Otters.
