Ceri Young inspires Newbridge to seven try victory

Newbridge returned to winning ways in style in the Championship, dishing out a 45-10 hiding to basement boys Pontypool.

Fullback Ceri Young was star of the show, displaying scintillating speed and agility to claim a hat-trick. Gareth Jones, Geraint Thomas, Mark Cox and Jon Morris also went over for the hosts while Neil Burnett, who was largely anonymous last week, was back to his best in releasing his backline and slotting five conversions.

Leaders Ebbw Vale were made to work at Glan-Yr-Afon to maintain their 100% record, eventually running out 32-17 victors over Blackwood.
The Steelmen raced into an 11-3 lead through a Wes Cunliffe touchdown and two Dan Haymond penalties but just before the break, Haymond was sin binned and Josh Clark struck for the hosts with Josh Steer adding the extras.

Down to 14 men at the start of the second half, Ebbw Vale were under the cosh and went behind when Nicky Williams crossed for Blackwood’s second to take a 17-11 lead. However, Ebbw Vale fought back with stalwart flanker Ronny Kynes crossing for a double, and Charlie Simpson also going over.

Bargoed remain level on points at the summit after they crushed Llanharan 40-16 in a five try bonanza.

Bargoed, who narrowly missed out on the One East crown last season, look determined to get their hands on some silverware this year as they produced a clinical performance to blow their rivals away. Lee Pearson bagged a brace, while Gareth Dare, James Pizey and James Howe also crossed, Josh Prosser adding 15 points with the boot.

In the West Wales derby, Narberth took away the bragging rights after defeating struggling Whitland 24-8.

Rhys Roberts will reap the plaudits as the outside half collected 14 of his side's points through a try, two conversions and a penalty, with the rest of the visitors' points coming through a penalty try and a Steve Martin touchdown.

Meanwhile, Tata Steel left it late before they claimed a 23-9 win at Bonymaen. The visitors' forward dominance eventually paid dividends as they were awarded two penalty tries late on, while Gareth Walters added 14 points with the boot.

For the second week in a row, Glamorgan Wanderers were involved in a draw, this time with Beddau as the teams were locked at 13-13 at the whistle.

Elsewhere, Bridgend Athletic made it two wins on the bounce with a 17-10 home victory over Cardiff Met.
