BARRING an extraordinary set of results, Carmarthen
Wanderers have sealed promotion to division one of the South Wales Cricket
Association.
It’s still mathematically possible for them to be caught but
you’d need a collapse of epic proportions and third-placed Bronwydd to take
maximum points from their remaining three fixtures to see Carmarthen miss out.
The two clubs saw their games yesterday curtailed because of
the wet weather with Bronwydd’s opponents Cowbridge the others in the hunt for
promotion.
An opening stand of 136 between Daniel Jones (75) and Giles
Thomas (61) put the Wanderers on the way to 227-5 but he rain came with
Llandysul on 81-3.
Cowbridge captain Thomas Merilaht scored 57 of his team’s
140-8 but only 10 overs were possible in Bronwydd’s reply.
Elsewhere, Josh Simmons blasted 96 for Gorseinon as they
made a superb 264-7 against Morriston, but the visitors’ stubborn resistance
paid off and they clung on for a draw at 109-9.
There were wins for Llanelli, by 131 against relegated
Briton Ferry Steel, and Skewen, by three wickets, at home to Aberdare.
The race for promotion from division three looks to be going
to the wire with Porthcawl and Swansea Civil Service, who picked up a winning
draw and a 55-run victory respectively, just three points apart.
Leaders Briton Ferry Town had to settle for a losing draw
against Hills Plymouth while at the bottom Landore secured a crucial success at
home to Pontyberem.
Cimla and Dyffryn are on course to go up in division four
but neither picked up outright wins on Saturday. Baglan claimed a winning draw
against Dyffryn and Cimla’s match at Llantwit Major Cavaliers was abandoned.
There were home wins, however, for Ystradgynlais and Llandeilo against Kidwelly and Felinfoel respectively.
