Pontypridd RFC’s back row options will be considerably enhanced by the return of Ed Siggery to the club’s ranks in readiness for the coming season.
The powerhouse blind-side flanker makes his way back to Sardis Road after a brief one year absence, during which time he signed for London Irish in the English Premiership, and also played on permit for promotion-winning Championship side London Welsh.
Hailing from Carmarthen, Siggery developed as a player through the Scarlets Academy and represented Wales at all youth age grades up to under 20 level.
Having enrolled as a student at the University of Glamorgan, he joined up with Pontypridd in the summer of 2010 and made a big impact with his “double D” performances – dynamic and destructive - on the flank. “The Sig” also became a big favourite with the Sardis Road support, a larger than life character both on and off the field of play.
Siggery now returns to Pontypridd, joining the club’s campaign as defending Premiership Champions.
Aged 21, standing at 6ft 3in and weighing in at a lean and mean 16st, the Sig will seek to resume his status as a key player for a club intent on challenging for domestic and cross border honours in the coming season.
Siggery should get his chance to sign when Pontypridd play their second summer warm up match, hosting near neighbours Llantrisant at Sardis Road on Friday evening, 10th August (7:15pm k.o.), as the side look to build up some momentum heading into the forthcoming league campaign.
With a home win against Ystrad Rhondda already registered, Ponty will now face Division Two East side Llantrisant - the "Black Army" - and will be boosted by the return of a number of key players from holiday and injury.
The front row department, which had been badly depleted, has been enhanced by the addition of Scott Roberts after recovering from an ankle injury, and Pat Palmer and Chris Phillips who are both back off leave.
Ynysybwl product Owen Jenkins is given a run on the wing having notched up two tries against Ystrad Rhondda, with another youngster Dafydd Davies from Cilfynydd given a chance to impress in the second row.
Carl Thomas makes his bow at scrum half following his return to Pontypridd, likewise flanker Ed Siggery who takes a place on the bench. Young centre Harry Davies is also amongst the replacements, lining up against his own club, Llantrisant.
The Pontypridd team selected to face Llantrisant is as follows:
15.Geraint Walsh. 14.Owen Jenkins. 13.Matthew Nuthall. 12.Tom Pascoe. 11.Gareth Wyatt. 10.Dai Flanagan. 9.Carl Thomas.
1.Scott Roberts. 2.Darran Harris. 3.Pat Palmer. 4.Craig Locke. 5.Dafydd Davies. 6.Jake Thomas. 7.Calum Thomas. 8.Dan Godfrey.
