Former Scorpions coach gets top NRL job

South Wales Scorpions’ first ever head coach Anthony Seibold has a new position as Head Coach of Melbourne Storm under 20s.

After months of negotiation Seibold, on Monday, signed a two-year deal to coach the side having rejected offers from other NRL clubs. He will start the role on November 1st.

As well as the opportunity to continue to learn under Craig Bellamy, the chance to coach the club's next generation of stars swayed him to sign after announcing mid-season that he would be stepping down from the head coaching role of Queensland Cup side Mackay Cutters, where he has been since leaving the Scorpions in late 2010.

The Australian has fond memories of his time in Neath and wishes the Scorpions luck for their last home game of the season this Sunday against Gateshead Thunder at The Gnoll (kick-off 3pm).

"I hope the Scorpions finish the season on a high," he said. "It's been a challenging year from all reports, but the amount of young Welsh talent that has been exposed to Championship One Rugby this year bodes well for the future. I always have fond memories of the Scorpions and enjoyed helping to launch the club."

Seibold originally came to Wales as an assistant to John Dixon at the old Celtic Crusaders and did a variety of coaching roles for them as well as playing for them in the first season in 2006. When the Crusaders headed north, he took over at Scorpions and led us to the play-offs in our first season.

Seibold says his new role is a tremendous opportunity for him.

"Melbourne Storm has had sustained success for a number of years and the opportunity to learn from Craig Bellamy was probably the most crucial factor in me signing with the club," he said. "I met with Craig in Melbourne a few weeks ago where he explained the expectations he puts on his players and the coaches at the club.

"They've got a certain culture they want to maintain and when a new player or coach comes in the Storm are very forthright in what their expectations are."
