Beddau 30-21 Bargoed
Beddau upset the odds
to defeat Bargoed, handing them their second successive Worthington Mid District
Cup heartbreak at Pontypridd’s Sardis Road.
Last season saw Treorchy shatter the Barg and now it was
Beddau’s turn, sweet revenge having lost both home and away to them in the
Championship this season.
The Beddau squad celebrate after an entertaining win over Bargoed.
It was a sensational match that showed just how gutsy coach
Justin Burnell and his Beddau squad are as they battled away and visibly grew
in confidence as the game wore on.
Pre-match favourites Bargoed were met by a string of fine
tackles, and when Dafydd Carter dropped James Pizey’s pass with the line
looming, their biggest chance had gone.
Early penalties by Tom Benjamin for Beddau and Bargoed’s
Chris Mapps were followed by a great forward drive and try from Beddau skipper
Rob Downes, which Benjamin converted.
However, Mapps kicked another penalty only for Beddau to
score a smart try as Adam Williams sent Benjamin clear.
Bargoed came back with slick passing sending wing Simon Parry
over and Mapps converted, but Benjamin’s penalty took Beddau to an 18-16 lead
at the interval.
It was a further 27 tense minutes before another score came
as a clever pass sent replacement Beddau flanker George Lee in at the corner
for a crucial score.
Then with eight minutes remaining, strong forward play led
to swift passing and Beddau left wing Curtis Cunningham went in at the corner
with Benjamin landing the extra points.
Bargoed gave it their best shot and deserved a consolation
try by lively wing replacement Gareth Dare after a superb 50-metre move with
several players involved.
But it was just too late, and Beddau deservedly won it with
referee Gwyn Morris turning in a top-class performance. Not one card was needed
to be shown in a fine 80 minutes of thrilling rugby.
