CARMARTHEN Town have made former midfielder Neil Smothers their new player/manager.
The 33-year-old takes over at the helm of the Welsh Premier League’s bottom team following Tomi Morgan’s sacking.
Smothers, whose previous clubs include Merthyr Tydfil, Port Talbot Town and Cwmbran, originally joined the Old Gold back in 2004 and returns to west Wales having spent last season in Australia.
He was playing for Welsh League side Bridgend Town, the team Carmarthen beat in Morgan’s final match in charge last Friday, when approached by Richmond Park chiefs to fill the managerial vacancy. However, Smothers will not be eligible to play until the January transfer window.
His first match in charge will be this Saturday’s league encounter at Airbus UK Broughton and Smothers’ sole task this season is to save Carmarthen from relegation as they have picked up only three wins from 18 games so far.
“We are deeply grateful to Tomi for his contribution to the club over the past 18 months,” said chairman Gareth Jones. “It was his experience and skills that kept us in the league last season when we faced a difficult period after the resignation of Deryn Brace.
“He was the unanimous choice of the executive committee at that time. Unfortunately, this season has not seen the club move forward on the field and it was decided that a fresh face needed to be brought in to improve performances.”
Also returning to Richmond Park will be Kevin Morris to add his experience to the managerial team.
