Bargoed convincingly progressed in to the second round of the Swalec Cup with a 26-0 triumph over fellow One East club Blackwood at Glan Yr Afon.
The fixture was originally meant to be played at Bargoed Park, but the weather put paid to this and the match was switched, but this did not disrupt the Bargoed winning machine, however.
The visitors crossed for three tries through Matthew Hutcheon, Adam Coupe and Lee Williams. Josh Prosser slotted home three penalties and one conversion.
Tondu survived a second half fight-back from the visiting Merthyr, edging to a 26-24 victory at Pandy Park.
The Waterwheelers raced into a 26-3 lead, running in three tries through Andrew Fryer and a Matthew Morgan brace, while captain Paul Smithson landed three penalties and a conversion.
With the game seemingly over as a competition, the Ironmen, who reached the quarterfinals last year, would not lie down and hit back by touching down for three tries of their own through Keith Snape, John Taylor and Andrew Murphy. Lloyd Hines converted all three to add to Josh Flye’s first half penalty, but they fell just short of pulling off a remarkable comeback.
In the West Wales derby, Carmarthen Athletic came out on top 24-10 at Whitland.
Athletic, who have put together a good run of performances, had too much up front for their local rivals and outscored the hosts three tries to one, with hooker Gethin Robinson bagging a brace and fly half Rhys Lane also going over. Full back Mike Sauro fired home three penalties.
The Borderers' solitary try of the game came through Will Davies with Huw Rees adding the extras, while Jonathan Thomas also slotted a first half penalty.
Meanwhile, Newbridge required extra time to dispatch Gilfach Goch, eventually triumphing 19-16 at Welfare Park. Neil Burnett was the hero of the day for the visiting side, slotting the all-important penalty in the first half of extra time and amassing fourteen points in all.
Division One East’s Treorchy made the long trip west and came away with a 22-13 victory at Narberth.
The Zebras' star of the day was once again Celyn Ashton who fired home five penalties and converted Jordan Lloyd's touchdown.
The Otters meanwhile will be disappointed with their second half performance after taking a narrow 10-9 lead into the interval. The West Walians could only muster a Nick Jones penalty after the break to add to his first half penalty and conversion of Aled Jenkins' try.
Elsewhere, the match between Beddau and Waunarlwydd was postponed due to a frozen pitch and has been rescheduled for next weekend.
