Swalec Championship Weekend Predictions

Ebbw Vale v Whitland

Jason Strange’s first match in charge was the reverse of this fixture back in October where the Borderers produced the shock of the season, claiming their only victory and inflicting the Steelmen’s only defeat. Admittedly Whitland have beaten Ebbw once and clearly have the ability to produce, but if I had a mortgage, I’d confidently bet that the Steelmen will be the winning side come 4 o’clock on Saturday.
Verdict - Ebbw Vale by 30 points
 Glamorgan Wanderers v Bridgend Athletic
The Wanderers are in the midst of a battle for survival and currently sit in the drop zone while Athletic aren’t out of the woods yet. I believe this match will go a long way in determining if Glamorgan can avoid the drop; if they are to survive, they need to start picking up points at home against teams around them. The hosts haven’t had a league match in over a month and rustiness could be an issue, while Athletic were outmuscled by Cardiff Met last time out.
Verdict - Bridgend Athletic by 5 points
 Llanharan v Cardiff Met
The Dairymen haven’t played in the league since their loss at home against Blackwood at the beginning of February and will be keen to return to winning ways. The students, however, are currently enjoying a rich vein of form sitting third in the table, but I wonder with a semi-final in BUCS against old rivals, Hartpury, next Wednesday looming, will their minds be elsewhere on Saturday? Cardiff Met are my team of the season having surprised many and it should be a good forward battle when they meet at the Dairyfield.
Verdict - Cardiff Met by 3 points
 Narberth v Bargoed
The Otters had a Friday to forget last week when they were trounced at Tata Steel, and they know if they produce a similar sort of performance this time round they’ll be on the wrong end of another thumping. There is a different type of pressure on the Bargoed; they currently sit four points behind Ebbw Vale at the summit and know any slip-up will surely see them fall further behind. I do expect a much improved performance from the Otters, but still think Bargoed will win.
Verdict - Bargoed by 10 points
 Newbridge v Bonymaen
Newbridge’s pitch took a hammering during our never ending spate of bad weather, and it is a testament to the volunteer ground staff that the field is once again playable. As for the game itself, Bony are still in danger of the drop and a victory here would go a long way in helping their cause. Newbridge meanwhile are still aiming for a top three finish and I think they should pick up their 12th win of the season on Saturday.
Verdict - Newbridge by 10 points
 Pontypool v Blackwood
These two sides met a few weeks ago in the Cup where, having seen their form take an upward spiral since the New Year, Blackwood steam rolled to victory. Having been dropped from the Premiership, Pontypool are exempt from relegation this season and are looking to rebuild. They’ve only managed one win so far this season, however, and I think they will face a difficult task to double that tally tomorrow.
Verdict - Blackwood by 10 points
 Tata Steel v Beddau
The Port Talbot side were ruthless in their demolition of Narberth last week and will want to replicate the same form against the Green and Golds. Tata still have a realistic chance of finishing in the top three and if that is to come to fruition, they need a good win here. Beddau, who have been solid all season, will surely give Tata a run for their money, but I think the hosts will come out on top in the end.
Verdict - Tata Steel by 15 points
