Bargoed win Worthington Mid District Cup

BARGOED 39-20 MERTHYR
Bargoed gained revenge for their only league loss of the season 25 days earlier by Merthyr as they added the Worthington Mid District Cup at Sardis Road, Pontypridd, to their earlier Championship success.

It has been the best-ever season by both the Bargoed and Merthyr clubs, who had finished first and third respectively in league play but it was the Blues of Bargoed who were clear and deserved winners over the Ironmen of Merthyr.

The opening quarter saw Bargoed lead 14-0 but Merthyr were still in it as the interval was reached with Merthyr ahead at 20-10. Though Merthyr closed it to seven points, Bargoed then used their powerful pack and the scrummage in particular to wear their opponents down as they led 39-13 until the final seconds.

It was goodbye to both fly halves as the talented Josh Prosser of Bargoed has now signed for Cross Keys and Josh Flye is leaving Merthyr to play for Swansea. Prosser was luckier to have a powerful eight and a lively partner in scrum half Craig Morgan in front of him.

Both clubs are determined to fight their way upwards in Welsh rugby but on this occasion Bargoed, even without James Pizey and Lewis Protheroe, were stronger than Merthyr, who missed skipper Matthew Rees (holiday) and Dean Gunter (cuptied).

No 8 Ross Coombs, brother of Wales international Andrew, opened the scoring after just five minutes and Prosser converted before hooker and captain Leigh Meades surged over from a lineout ploy and again Prosser added the extras.

Merthyr suddenly woke up and luck was with full back Dan Parry for a kick and chase try that somehow he did not convert as Prosser struck back with a penalty four minutes later.

Again Merthyr hit back as wing Aaron Howard nipped in at the corner but again the boot of Prosser struck a penalty over just before the break.

Though Parry kicked a good penalty after 45 minutes it was Bargoed’s pack who took over with flanker Adam Coupe, then a penalty try and finally a second touchdown by Coombs bringing the five-pointers, plus two conversions by Prosser, to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Merthyr had the final say as they flung the ball around and teenage replacement prop Sam Evans did well to score with Parry drop-kicking the conversion.

It was a deserved win for Bargoed and crowned a season they will never forget while young North Walian referee Owain Griffiths gave another excellent display in allowing the game to flow.

Once again the partnership of Worthington and the Mid District committee had joined to help provide a fitting end to the season.

Falcons win the Worthington Cup

ABERTYSSWG FALCONS 23-16 HAFODYRYNYS
Abertysswg Falcons gained the Worthington Gwent and District (Cyrus Davies) Cup for the third successive year when they saw off a depleted, but brave, Hafodyrynys side at Glan Yr Afon Park, Blackwood.
The Falcons gave their departing coaches a great send off as both head coach Leigh Meddlicott and his assistant Gareth Richards are both moving onto new ventures to join the coaching set-ups at the under 16 sides of the Cardiff Blues and Newport Gwent Dragons respectively.
Meddlicott said “This is my last game at Abertysswg and I am proud and thrilled to be part of a journey that has taken us from Division Six to Division Two.”
Despite being two divisions below Abertysswg, it was Hafodyrynys who took an early lead via a penalty from outside half Kris Moses as both sides tried to settle into a rhythm. From a lineout Hafod attacked again and a clever inside switch put full back Rob Smith, one of the small band of players who have scored over 100 league tries,  in for a try converted by Moses for a 10-0 advantage after 18 minutes.
Abertysswg reduced the arrears with a 35 metre penalty from their outside half and captain Jamie Howells, the former Wales Districts cap, before play was held up for several minutes whilst an injured Hafodyrynys forward was treated for injury.
Play switched from end to end but defences held firm before Moses added a long range penalty to increase the Hafod lead, though from the restart Abertysswg earned another penalty slotted by Howells immediately followed by the half time whistle at 13-6.
The Falcons were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and soon wiped out the seven-point interval deficit with a try by Rhys Davies converted by Howells to tie the scores.
Both sides continued to accrue injuries but Hafodyrynys, with only two replacements named, gamely battled on as both Moses and Howells had unsuccessful penalty goal attempts and the sides sparred for an opening before Moses found his range to put his side ahead at 16-13.
Fresh legs in the Aberytsswg ranks then paid dividends as following a scrum the ball was put through several pairs of hands before replacement Joey Buckley crossed for a try converted by Howells to put his side ahead for the first time in the game and a Howells penalty two minutes from time finally broke the resistance of brave Hafodyrynys.
Tina Tew, on behalf of sponsors Molson Coors, presented Howells and his happy Falcons squad with the famous old cup.
Scorers.

Worthington Newport and District Cup Final: Hartridge 34-10 Caldicot Athletic

Hartridge RFC became the Worthington Newport and District Cup winners after defeating Caldicot Athletic in the final at the Whiteheads Ground in Rogerstone.

Though Hartridge scored 4-2 on the try-count and dominated the game territorially, the Caldicot side scored the first and last tries and tackled manfully throughout.

As it was, Hartridge had too much weight up front and their charging forward rushes were hard to stop, yet Caldicot managed to do so for much of the 80 minutes, but they suffered a cruel blow just on the interval when a totally accidental collision saw the Athletic full back Kyle Deakin laid out and he departed the field.

Hartridge had a livewire wing in Dexter Lewis, who not only scored scored a brace of tries, but seemed to pop up everywhere and was like a rubber ball at times.

Fly half Gareth Hopkins scored 12 points and Mitch Williams was strong at centre with Rob Jones standing out in the pack for the winners, while Caldicot had a splendid scrum half replacement in young James Taylor when Matt Burton was forced to drop back to full back.

Hartridge almost scored in the first minute before Hopkins kicked them in front after 14 minutes but Caldicot centre Charlie Deacon hacked on, gathered and sped clear for a fine try.

The lead lasted until just on half-time as Hartridge captain Mike Wrench went over for a solo try that Hopkins converted and after 48 minutes he also goaled a Dex Lewis try.

Hopkins then placed a penalty and full back Richard Torjenson intercepted to run almost the length of the pitch with Hopkins converting.

Hartridge were now on to and the pacy Lewis pounced for his second try with Hopkins converting but much of the last ten minutes belonged to brave Caldicot and they deservedly scored a try through hooker Scott Baker.

Skipper Wrench accepted the cup from Joanne Hurley, Accounts Manager of Molson Coors in front of the delighted Hartridge supporters.

Merthyr face Bargoed in the Worthington Mid District Cup Final

The WORTHINGTON Mid District Cup Final will be played between Merthyr and Bargoed at Sardis Road, Pontypridd on Wednesday, May 20 and promises to be one of the best-ever matches in this fine competition's history.

In the semi-finals Merthyr defeated Nelson by 49-21 at Abercynon, while Bargoed beat Division One East champions Penallta by 31-0 at Caerphilly.

The final will be more exciting following Merthyr's shock win at Bargoed in the Championship that was the only league loss of the season thus far by Bargoed, who have already won that title.

The Worthington East District rugby final will be played between Dinas Powys and St Peter’s at the Glamorgan Wanderers ground on Wednesday, May 6.

Dinas Powys gained a hard-earned 18-6 win over Pontyclun in one semi-final as Nathan Williams (2) and James Wiltshire scored tries and Gavin Cooper kicked a penalty against two early penalties from Pontyclun.

St Peter’s ran clear against Barry in nthe other semi-final  though Danny Ryan touched down for Barry and Einan Scott kicked three penalty goals.

The ‘Rocks’, coached by former Wales back Mark Ring and skippered by former Cardiff lock Kris Barry, will now come up against Dinas Powys coach John Dunleavy, who is a former St Peter’s player.

weekend predictions

All Wales Sport previews the sixth and final round of the British & Irish Cup along with the only Principality Premiership game taking place this weekend.

Pool 1 – London Scottish v Pontypridd

Having snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at Bristol almost a fortnight ago, Ponty recovered from that confidence-crushing defeat with a bonus-point home win over Connacht last week that reignited their British & Irish Cup hopes.

Another five-point win guarantees qualification for the last eight as one of the three best runners-up – while four points will almost certainly do as well.

Standing before them are London Scottish, who although already out, have only been beaten once (by Bristol) on their own ground this season while Ponty also slipped up here 26-21 almost exactly a year ago.

The pressure is on Ponty for sure but, although a lot will depend on what side the English Championship side put out with nothing riding on it for them, I’m going for a Ponty win nonetheless.

Prediction: Pontypridd by 6 points

Pool 2 – Ulster Ravens v Aberavon

Aberavon's losing run was extended to eight games with last Saturday's 42-14 home defeat to Rotherham.

The Wizards also have not won in any competition since they beat Ulster 18-14 at The Talbot Athletic Ground in the reverse fixture on October 11.

Although they have at least salvaged some pride with some gutsy recent performances in defeat and I’m backing Jason Hyatt's side to complete the double over winless Ulster.

Prediction: Aberavon by 5 points

Pool 4 – Doncaster Knights v Cross Keys

Seven of the 10 matches played in Pool 4 have resulted in a winning margin of five points or less.

Cross Keys, while bottom of the pool, have more than held their own this season – although were taken apart at home by Bedford last weekend.

Their two previous away trips to English Championship clubs have ended in a one-point win (v Bedford) and a one-point loss (v Cornish Pirates).

Group winners Doncaster won 37-32 at Pandy Park in round one and I’ve got them down to finish the group with a 100 per cent record.

Prediction: Doncaster by 7 points

Pool 5 - Carmarthen Quins v Jersey

The winners of this tie – being played at Llandovery – can still go through as one of the best runners-up, if Munster A and Cornish Pirates are well beaten.

Jersey are on a four-game losing streak but won with a bonus point when the sides met back in October.

Although I think Carmarthen – a composite Scarlets A side in all but name – will win on Saturday and finish on a high, I fear it’s a big ask for all the results needs elsewhere to go their way.

Prediction: Carmarthen Quins by 10 points

ALL ROUND SIX MATCHES KICK OFF AT 2PM ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13.

Principality Premiership – Cardiff v Neath (2.30pm)

There is also one Principality Premiership clash taking place on Saturday and it’s at the Arms Park between Cardiff and Neath.

The Welsh All Blacks have undergone something of a transformation with three wins from their last four Premiership outings to revive their flagging fortunes after a tough start to the season that, for many, left them odds on for the drop.

Patrick Horgan’s re-introduction at the Gnoll has certainly helped turn things around and will hope to carry on from where they left off three weeks ago when they beat Newport at Rodney Parade – despite playing with 14 men for much of the game.

However it must also be said that, although Neath dug in, Newport were also particularly poor on the day and a better side would have capitalised on their numerical advantage.

Cardiff on their own ground will provide a much sterner test and will themselves will be looking forward to returning to action after many weeks of being stop-start, with the league taking a back seat for the British & Irish Cup.

The Blue and Blacks currently sit in fourth place in the table with five wins from seven games.

I expect a fiercely-contested battle between these two but back Cardiff to win and make it six from eight with the enforced three-week break also likely to have halted Neath’s new-found momentum just slightly.

Prediction: Cardiff by 11 points

Maesteg to face Tondu in inaugural Austen Howells Memorial Cup match

THE inaugural Austen Howells Memorial Cup match takes place tomorrow evening (Friday) between Maesteg and Tondu.

The game is a tribute to the late Howells, who died aged just 40 while on a stag weekend in Manchester back in August.

Howells, who had just taken a coaching role at his hometown side Maesteg before his death, also represented Tondu during a distinguished career.

The game, which will be played annually between the two clubs, will also help support the respective junior sections.

Tomorrow night's fixture – which is being played at the Old Parish – kicks off at 7.15pm.

Swalec League Weekend Review

Last season’s runners up Cardiff Met are starting to move through the gears after a slow start to their Swalec Championship campaign, and the Students clinched their third triumph as they dismissed new boys Merthyr 45-14.
Crymych wing Carwyn Phillips in action against Kidwelly
Connor Nicholls was at the double while James Beal, John Dawe, Charlie Hewitt and Emerson Beffell also crossed. Owen Thomas fired over three penalties and landed three conversions.
Meanwhile, it remains nip and tuck at the summit as both Bargoed and Swansea maintained their perfect record at the summit.
Bargoed currently head the table on 25 points as they picked up their fifth consecutive bonus point win with a 49-14 success at Tondu.
The brilliant Blues were in seventh heaven with touchdowns from Keiran Brown, Lee Meades, Ross Coombes, James Pizey, Darren Humphreys, Rhys Humphreys and Dai James, while Josh Prosser added 14 points from the tee.
For the Waterwheelers it was their fourth defeat on the bounce, with the hosts’ tries coming from Matthew Morgan and Hywel Davies
Swansea, meanwhile, were far too strong for Newbridge at St Helens as they cruised to a nine try 57-14 success.
Jon Fox and Tom Sloane both bagged braces for the All Whites while touchdowns from Aled Jenkins, Mike Sully, Joe Thomas, Jon Vaughan and Matthew Davies completed the rout. Liam Popham added the extras to six.
In the battle at the bottom, Blackwood grabbed their maiden win as they saw off fellow strugglers Llanharan 35-29 at Glan-yr-Afon.
Elsewhere, Narberth did just enough to see off the challenge of North Walian visitors RGC 1404 with a 24-22 victory at the Lewis Lloyd Ground, while Tata Steel claimed a bonus point 30-17 home win over Bridgend Athletic.
In the day’s other fixture, a late Josh Guy touchdown saw Pontypool grab a bonus point 29-13 success at Glynneath.
COBRA were unable to keep up with the Joneses in One North as Nant Conwy swept to a 51-0 home win.
Aeron, Evan, Rhys and Grant Jones all went over as Nant crossed for nine tries in all, while Gwion Ellis-Jones landed three conversions.
In a tight derby encounter in One East it was Rhiwbina that took home the bragging rights as they edged past hosts Glamorgan Wanderers 18-13.
Rhiwbina's Tom Marley dives over against Glamorgan Wanderers
The Squirrels went over twice through Tom Marley and Matthew Hall, with Brett Chatwin slotting two penalties and a conversion from the tee. The visitors led 18-8 when they were reduced to 14 men as Dan Murphy saw red, but they held on to claim their fourth straight win.
The Wanderers had to settle for a losing bonus point with Ed Morris and Rhys Jenkins crossing for the them.
In One East Central, Ryan Howells was the star of the show for Ystrad Rhondda as the centre claimed four of his side’s eight tries as they demolished Gilfach Goch 56-18.
Meanwhile, Beddau made it four wins from four as they dismissed Treorchy 29-12.
The Green and Golds went over for five touchdowns through Christian Francis, Jordan Coombes, Glenn Slater, Tom Benjamin and Callum Wheeler.
Tenby United remain unbeaten at the summit of One West as they did just enough to see off Llangennech 29-27.
United crossed four times as they bagged maximum points with touchdowns from Toby Smith, Dan Colley, Jonathan Rogers and Luke Dedman, while Rogers also added nine points from the tee.
Adam Davies scored a scintillating try for Kidwelly in their 34-8 win over Crymych
Elsewhere, Crymych were no match for Kidwelly as the Black and Ambers cruised to a 34-8 away win.
The visitors outscored their rivals four tries to one with touchdowns from Steffan Marshall, Adam Davies, Berian Watkins and  Luke Marshal.
In a high scoring encounter in One West Central, Bonymaen racked up their third victory as they saw off Mumbles 39-34. Bony hit the visitors for six- John Hindman was at the double while Jacob Clement, Mark Simons, Rob Jones and James Bija.
The Black and Ambers Rich Rees worked tirelessly all afternoon

Aberavon Green Stars racked up their third win in Two West Central as they comfortably dispatched Resolven 31-17.
Nathan Flynn bagged a try treble while Sam Owen was at the double. Sean Curran added the extras to two and Christian Roberts slotted one conversion.
In Three East Central B, Steve Barry stole the show for Treharris Phoenix as he crossed for a hat-trick as the hosts saw off Tylorstown 38-0.
Daniel Davies was at the double with Dale Evans also going over, while Ross Jones added the extras to four.
St David’s continue to struggle in Three West B as they were on the wrong end of another thumping, going down 76-10 at home to Fishguard.

Principality Premiership weekend predictions

All Wales Sport’s CARL FIELD previews this weekend’s Principality Premiership fixtures.

Llanelli v Neath (Friday)

Llanelli will fancy their chances after pushing Carmarthen Quins all the way last weekend, while Neath need to make massive improvements in their scrum play if they are to get their first points on the board.

Prediction: Llanelli by 7 points

Aberavon v Pontypridd

Jason Hyatt’s side will be buoyed by picking up their first win of the season at Bedwas but I can’t see past yet another bonus point win for the champions – who will be determined not to produce a repeat of their lacklustre first half display against Bridgend last Saturday.

Prediction: Pontypridd by 15 points

Bedwas v Carmarthen Quins

Bedwas’ win at Cross Keys a fortnight ago proves they can mix with the best of them on their day, but I don’t expect a shock here against an in-form Carmarthen side, who have started with three wins from three.

Prediction: Carmarthen Quins by 10 points

Bridgend v Newport

The Ravens have struggled so far, although can take encouragement from their performance at Pontypridd, where they were unfortunate not to earn at least a losing bonus point. Conversely Newport kicked started their campaign with victory at Ebbw Vale last time out and I predict they’ll leave Brewery Field with the spoils tomorrow.

Prediction: Newport by 5 points

Cross Keys v Ebbw Vale

Cross Keys, who have recorded two wins on the road, will be keen to avoid a repeat of their shock home defeat against Bedwas a fortnight ago against the Premiership new boys – who tasted defeat for the first time since returning to the top flight against Newport last weekend.

Prediction: Cross Keys by 7 points

Llandovery v Cardiff

Early pace setters Cardiff suffered a setback against Cross Keys last Saturday and are on the road for the first time at the Drovers, who I’m backing to record their third straight win.

Prediction: Llandovery by 5 points

New boys Ebbw Vale 'ready for the challenge'

Jason Strange says Principality Premiership new boys Ebbw Vale have nothing to fear as they prepare to make their top flight return after a five-year absence.

The Championship champions begin life back in the Premiership with a home clash against Llandovery on Saturday.

And, despite the fact they will start as firm underdogs, head coach Strange is determined to make sure his side won’t just be making up the numbers.

He said: “We understand the standard is going to be higher in the Premiership, but we’re ready for that challenge.

“It’s great to have a home game to kick things off. We lost to Llandovery narrowly in the cup last year – so that will be in the back of our mind – and I’m sure the supporters will be looking forward to it.

“We are pleased with the way players have come back after the break and their fitness testing was the best in the five years I’ve been here.

“Our approach this season is to concentrate on being the best we can and improving within ourselves.”

Badgers all sett for new season

Under the direction of Blues Captain Matthew Rees and ex-Pontypridd man Jason Lewis, Pontyclun kicked off their Two East Central campaign with a narrow victory over last season’s Four South East champions St Josephs.

The match was nip and tuck throughout before the Badgers eventually triumphed 20-17, with Lloyd Rose and Carl Jenkins touching down, while Huw Probyn added ten points from the tee including a late penalty from half way.

The Badgers' victory was the only away win in the division on the opening weekend of what will surely be a very competitive league.

Pontyclun Secretary Greg Lamerton was relieved the Badgers picked up a win to start their campaign

“We are definitely happy with the result, it was a tough opening match-up for us. They had a big pack and perhaps we were slightly fortunate to come away with the four points,” said Lamerton.

After acquiring the enviable coaching duo of Blues skipper Rees, who already has some coaching experience under his belt at Tonyrefail, and Lewis, who has a great coaching reputation, you would be forgiven in thinking that players would be flocking to Pontyclun to learn under their tutelage. But Lamerton says that it hasn’t worked out that way.

“We did think having Jason and Matthew, two people who have played and in Matthew’s case still playing at the highest level, might attract a few more players but we actually lost a few players in the summer.”

Pontyclun saw three members of their squad move on to pastures new in the summer with Nicky Theaker joining Llanharan, while Adam Lewis and Adam Court are now playing at Beddau.

However, they have made one new recruit in hooker Sam Grant, who joined the fold from Pencoed.

“We are always looking to strengthen our squad. We train twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Windsor Road,” added Lamerton.

“Hopefully, we have a few players returning from injury which will add to the squad’s depth with Ceiron Jones, Luke Rose and Gavin Pascoe all likely to feature for us soon.”

Pontyclun host last season’s Swalec Bowl champions Clwb Rygbi Cymry Caerdydd this weekend and Lamerton is predicting another close affair.

“They were promoted last season and we are definitely expecting another tough match, but hopefully we can get the win at home,”said Lamerton.

Finally, with top class coaching at hand, what are Lamerton’s expectations for this year’s campaign?

“I think it’s going to be a difficult league as there are some very strong teams, and though we anticipate a mid-table finish for ourselves, we’re certainly not expecting to gain promotion this year,” added Lamerton.

Cardiff Blues sign prop Adam Jones

BY CARL FIELD

Pro12 side Cardiff Blues have announced the signing of Wales and British & Irish Lions prop Adam Jones.

Front row Jones, who has made 95 appearances for Wales and toured twice with the Lions, has put pen to paper on a deal to play his rugby at Cardiff Arms Park this season.

“This is about a new challenge for me.” said Jones.

“At this stage in my career I want a new environment and to really push myself.

“I've been really impressed by the set-up at Blues and the desire to achieve in the coming years under the leadership of Mark Hammett.

“It is that ambition and potential for the future that excites me about this move.”

Destructive prop Jones has been a cornerstone of the Welsh pack for the last decade, making his debut against England in 2003 and scoring on his first Six Nations appearance against Scotland the following year.

The Abercrave–born ace won the Grand Slam with Wales in 2005, 2008 and 2012 and has featured in the last three Rugby World Cups, making a total of 12 appearances.

The 33-year-old was also an integral member of the triumphant British & Irish Lions side that beat the Wallabies in 2013, adding three more caps to the two he won in South Africa in 2009.

Jones began his career with Neath in 1998 before switching to the Ospreys in 2003.

He made more than 150 appearances and won the Celtic League with Ospreys on four occasions in 2004/05, 2006/07, 2009/10 and 2011/12.

On leaving the Ospreys, Jones said: “Obviously I would like to thank everyone at the Ospreys – from the players and coaches to the wonderful supporters – who have been absolutely fantastic with me.

“I wish the region every success for the future.”

Mark Hammett, director of rugby at Cardiff Blues, said: “Adam has joined the Blues determined to achieve something special with us.

“He is as hungry as ever for success and a very driven man. Adam wants to make a difference and that is exactly why we want him here.

“He will be great for the younger players to learn off and is a world class tight-head prop who will add considerably to the squad we are assembling.

“He will improve what we are doing and I'm thrilled he is now a Blue for this season.”

Chairman Peter Thomas also spoke of his delight, saying: “We are delighted to recruit Adam and reunite the British & Irish Lions front row, alongside Matthew Rees and Gethin Jenkins.

“He is one of the very best props in Europe and, when it became clear he was available, we acted quickly, in conjunction with our director of rugby, to secure his services over the last 48 hours.

"We hope this signing excites our fans and they see this as fantastic news.”

Welsh rugby friendly round up

Rugby clubs across the country continue to gear up for the new campaign and there was no shortage of friendly action over the weekend, WRITES CARL FIELD.

There were impressive wins in particular for Principality Premiership sides Llandovery, Averavon, Bridgend and Cardiff.

Llandovery recorded a fine 34-15 win at Church Bank over Pontypridd – Premiership and Swalec Cup double winners for the past two seasons.

Tries from Shaun Mills, Rhys Williams, Sam Saul – plus a second half brace from Richard Williams – secured the win for Llandovery, who themselves narrowly missed out on the Premiership play-offs at the end of last season.

Meanwhile, there was a memorable Aberavon debut for teenage outside half Josh Williams, who scored 20 points – two tries and five conversions - in his side’s 45-5 defeat of Tata Steel at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

Bridgend were 25-5 winners at English National League One outfit Cinderford, where Adam Williams bagged a brace, while Cardiff ran home four tries as they beat another NL1 side Coventry 30-25 at Cardiff Arms Park.

James Loxton, Joe Griffin, Shaun Powell and Matt Marley all went over the whitewash.

Meanwhile it wasn’t such a good day for Swansea – relegated from the Premiership last year – as they were on the wrong end of a 76-5 hammering at English Championship side Doncaster.

Elsewhere, Neath went down to a 34-7 defeat against Plymouth Albion in the late game at the Knoll, while Llangennech scored six tries in their 36-10 friendly win at Bonymaen.

Chris Moore (2), Dan Roberts, Josh Sheldon, Rhys Davies and Tom Barnes were their try scorers.

Wales and Lions legend Quinnell to visit Machen RFC

Wales and Lions legend Scott Quinnell will be a special guest at Machen Rugby Club later this month.

The club has been named the overall winner of the NatWest RugbyForce Win a Pitch Makeover competition, after receiving more than 35 per cent of the public vote.

As a reward, they will receive a brand new pitch kit, a set of Under Armour training tops – as well as a visit from Quinnell, on Sunday, August 31.

The NatWest RugbyForce weekend is designed to encourage club players, coaches, supporters and volunteers to get together to help make valuable improvements to their club.

Of the 91 Welsh rugby clubs that registered for the programme, 30 were successful in earning £500 to help them complete projects and give their clubhouse and grounds a facelift on the last weekend of August.

Five of the 30 clubs – Cardigan RFC, Machynlleth RFC, Baglan RFC, Pontyclun RFC and Machen RFC were then shortlisted to go into a public vote to receive the overall NatWest Win a Pitch Makeover prize.

Each club filmed a video explaining why they believed they were the most worthy winners, with the public voting for their favourite.

After two weeks of intense competition, Machen RFC came out as worthy winners with a total of 2,929 votes, over 800 more than their nearest rivals.

Machen chairman Paul Crowley said: “We are grateful to all those who voted for Machen RFC.

“We are very much looking forward to the NatWest RugbyForce weekend and all getting together to help turn our dream into a reality.

“The generous grant from NatWest means we will be able to create a safe area behind the club for our large junior section to play and be part of the club.

“It will also mean we can improve our disabled access as we want to be truly inclusive and welcome all members of the community to our rugby club, for a variety of uses.

“We are asking everyone involved with the club to come down and be part of the NatWest RugbyForce weekend on Sunday, August 31 from 11am.

“It will be a case of all hands on deck with the improvements but there will also be a barbecue taking place during the day and with Scott Quinnell coming down there is sure to be a lot of fun and a party atmosphere too.”

WAUNARLWYDD 7 ABERAVON 59

After 22 hard minutes in which Waunarlwydd were on top and lead 7-0, Aberavon raced away to score nine tries at Roseland Road.

Full backs Howard Thomas (first half) and Jon Phillips (second half) both scored a brace of tries with Aberavon introducing many new young players.

Centre Dan Fox scored a goodd try that Lee Evans (though now an Aberavon player) converted but the Wizards led 21-7 at the break.

Neath 15-15 Doncaster Knights

Welsh Premiership outfit Neath held on to clinch a dramatic draw against the English Championship’s newest addition Doncaster Knights in a thrilling encounter at a wet and wild Gnoll.

But this pre season friendly turned ugly towards the end with Neath's Lee Evans dismissed for fighting late on, after several brawls erupted in the final ten minutes.

Doncaster outscored their Welsh hosts two tries to nil but Neath played the conditions better than their English rivals and deserved to get something out of the contest.

It was the hosts that started the brighter in the opening ten minutes and the boot of James Thomas gave them an early advantage.

But the professional side slowly moved up the gears and they were soon in the lead. After several phases, fly half Jamie Lennard spotted space behind the Neath defence and his cute dink outfoxed the hosts' cover into Knights winger Tyson Lewis' safe arms. Dougie Flockhart added the extras.

Whereas Doncaster's first try was full of skill and guile, their second shortly after was one for the forwards. From a driving line out Neath were powerless to stop the visitors marching over, with flanker Will Foden emerging with the ball.

If the first half belonged to the visitors, the second definitely belonged to their Welsh hosts.
The Knights' discipline began to falter and with the Welsh weather producing its worst, it was Neath that began to dominate proceedings.

Three well struck penalties from the boot of Thomas drew the hosts level.

Flockhart and Thomas then traded kicks as the game went into the final ten locked at 15-15.

With Neath down to 14 players Clive Griffiths' side looked like they had stolen it at the death with winger Flockhart crossing, but he was adjudged to have put his foot in touch on the way to touching down.

Ultimately there were positives for both teams as they kicked off their 2014/15 pre-season campaign –Neath’s Director of Rugby Rowland Phillips would have been impressed by his side's work ethic and scramble defence, while new signing Rhodri Cole at scrum half looked lively and posed a constant threat around the fringes.

For Clive Griffiths’ Knights, meanwhile, their sizeable backline caused a number of problems in the first half while their scrum was well on top throughout, and perhaps Doncaster would have felt they had done enough to claim the win. But it wasn’t all good news for the professional outfit as scrum half Brad Field, making his first start since last November, looked distraught as he limped from the pitch just before the interval.

On Saturday, Neath play host to another English Championship side, with Plymouth Albion the visitors at the Gnoll, while Doncaster have more Welsh opposition when Swansea visit Castle Park.

District rugby - Moffett fails to appear‏

Club members and guests attending the annual Presentation Evening of the Llanelli District Rugby Union at Pontyates RFC last Friday night heard nothing from guest speaker, David Moffett, after he failed to turn up.
Llanelli District chairman, Anthony Roberts (right) presents the All Wales Sport Div 3 league champions trophy to Kidwelly skipper, Ashley Jones.
“He accepted the invitation to attend our dinner and he subsequently confirmed with me after the EGM in Port Talbot that he would be attending,” explained District chairman, Anthony Roberts.
“We had a room full of people who would have liked to have heard what he had to say after his speeches in Port Talbot and we were delighted that Scarlets general manager, Jon Daniels, who was attending as a guest, stepped in at the very last moment as the main speaker.”
And what Jon Daniels had to say delighted his audience when he confirmed that the Scarlets would be sponsoring the three 2nd XV leagues run by the District in 2014/15.
“It was very good news for us and it is great that the Scarlets are supporting local rugby. We are also pleased that the Llanelli & District Rugby Supporters Club are continuing their sponsorship for the Cup competition next season,” added Mr Roberts.
