Harry becomes youngest ever Duncan Putter winner

Welsh international Tim Harry tore up the record books as he held off a late fightback from his rivals to claim the prestigious Duncan Putter trophy at Southerndown.

The 15-year-old Stanwell pupil from Penarth became the youngest ever winner in the event’s 54 years, and kept his cool throughout a weather-effected tournament – the second round was cut to 15 holes – to emerge victorious with a gross of 266.

The Vale Resort star’s first and third rounds won him the trophy. He hit the joint-lowest score of 68 in the first to tie with Ireland’s Brian Casey, before outscoring everybody else in round three with a one-under 69. He hit par in his final round and, while the nine golfers behind him all carded lower scores, he had done enough to stave them off.

Another Irishman, Shane Mcglynn, was tied with Walsall’s Freddie Sheridan-Mills for second on 268, with Daniel Rosevear of Yelverton fourth with a 271 gross.

There wasn’t another Welshman in the Top 10, with co-defending champion Luke Thomas of Pontypridd 11th with a gross of 279, and the other 2012 winner Ben Westgate (Trevose/Southerndown), another Welsh international, further down the leaderboard on 282 having failed to hit par on any of his rounds.

Other Welsh internationals in action on the final day included Prestatyn’s Jason Shufflebotham, who returned a card of 281 to the clubhouse, while Will Jones of Oswestry finished with a gross of 286.

Young Gwent and Wales star Otto Mand finished with a gross of 286 after hitting par on the final round.

The Tenby Scratch ladies' event taking place in Tenby had to be abandoned after just three holes due to the weather, and the club say it is unlikely it will be re-arranged for later in the year.
