Pontrhydyfen continue imperious form

Pontrhydyfen extended their advantage to six points at the top of Division Six West with a tightly contested 17-11 home victory over Tregaron.

The leaders crossed twice through brothers Rhodri and Gareth Morris, with Adrian Thomas firing home one penalty and a conversion, while Aled Bevan also added a conversion.

The visitors, who sit third in the table, bagged a losing bonus point thanks to two Chris Jones penalties and a Rhydian Evans touchdown.

Meanwhile in a battle at the other end of the table, Llansawel moved off the bottom with their first victory of the season, defeating Mynydd y Garreg 19-5.

Llansawel outscored their rivals three tries to one through Ian O’Connor and a Dyfan Evans brace while Emyr Davies added two conversions.

Mynydd y Garreg, who now sit at the basement, could only muster a solitary try.

Elsewhere, in a mid table battle, Fall Bay narrowly came out on top 13-11 to move above their rivals South Gower.

The other scheduled match between Llangadog and Blaenau was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

Pacemakers Pontrhydyfen remain in pole position

Pacemakers Pontrhydyfen remain clear at the top of Division Six West thanks to a try bonus 31-0 triumph at South Gower.

The leaders crossed the hosts' line five times through a Rhodri Morris double with Rob Sutton, Lee Rogers and Gareth Morris also touching down. Aled Bevan added three conversions.

Penybanc meanwhile continue to hunt down the leaders after a 72-10 demolition of strugglers Blaeanau.

The highfliers helped themselves to twelve tries including hat tricks for wing Chris Davies and centre Geraint Evans, while captain Cellan Harris and wing Geraint Davies both bagged doubles. Scrumhalf Matthew Ladd and centre Nathan Jenkins also went over, with Matthew Lloyd landing six conversions.

Elsewhere, Llangadog edged out Pantyffynnon, 20-17, and Fall Bay overcame Llansawel, 20-10.

Pacemakers Pontrhydyfen continue to score tries for fun, as they convincingly dispatched the visiting Llansawel 54-7.

The leaders helped themselves to nine tries in all including a hat trick for scrum half Rhodri Morris and braces for both full back Gareth Morris and wing Jason Taylor, while centre Andrew Price and James Davies also got in on the act. Adrain Davies added six conversion.

Meanwhile, Tregaron picked up a comfortable home victory over close rivals South Gower, with the hosts bagging a 45-17 triumph.

The Ceredigion outfit crossed the visitors' line on seven occasions through a hat trick from Gethin Jones and a brace by Dafydd Hughes, with Rhydian Davies and Dai Davies also touching down. Chris Jones landed five out of the seven conversions.

Elsewhere, second placed Penybanc notched up their seventh win with a 17-10 victory at Pantyffynnon, and finally, Mynydd y Garreg, still reeling from their 115-0 loss last weekend, slipped to another defeat, but this time with a more respectable 22-15 losing scoreline to Llangadog.

Naval Booted out

Aberavon Naval have been booted out of the Swalec League after fulfilling just one fixture so far this season.

The Port Talbot-based club haven’t played in Division Six West since the opening day of the campaign, when they were thrashed by Penybanc, and now it seems the WRU has finally lost patience with them.

It’s understood a number of club members were away in New Zealand supporting Wales at the World Cup during September and October with hopes they could rearrange the postponed matches for later in the season.

But, as it is set out in the WRU’s rules and regulations, Welsh rugby’s governing body has the right to withdraw a team from the league if they don’t fulfil their fixtures.

The WRU does have the power to relegate a club in such circumstances but as Division Seven is comprised of only clubs from the East that does not appear to be an option in this case.

Naval finished rock bottom of Division Six Central last season with just one win from 18 games, 16 points adrift of the side immediately above them. No-one from the club, which was formed more than 30 years ago, was available for comment.
