The Ebbw Vale youngster (16) became the first Welsh player
to win such an event with a personal best result, and winning will help her
ranking greatly and give her a much needed push towards the ITTF Junior finals
next January in Rabat, Morocco.
Receiving a bye in the quarter-finals, she met English No1
and European No1 at Under-15 level Tin-Tin Ho in the semis, her doubles partner
at the same event. She came through 4-2, before meeting another English
hopeful, Maria Tsaptsinos in the final.
Carey lost the first game 24-22, but took the next three to
establish a 3-1 lead. Tsaptsinos cut that to 3-2, but a 14-12 in the sixth game
sealed a 4-2 win and gold.
Carey and Ho received a bye in the quarter-finals of the
doubles as they were top seeds. They faced the Polish pairing of Katarzyna
Galus and Sara Pytel in the semis, and won through 3-0.
Carey was to meet Tsaptsinos again in the final, alongside
compatriot Lois Peake, and the Welsh-English partnership took the match 4-1 to
make it two golds for Carey.
She is currently ranked No39 in the European Junior Girls
Rankings, and will be hoping that continued results will help her rise further.
